Hi Guys,
Finally bit the bullet a went for some new speakers. Thought I would post a bit of a guide for everyone elses reference.

FYI the rear speakers (parcel shelf) are 6 by 9 inch. The front ones are approx 6 inches, but you could fit 6.5" if you wanted (I fitted 6" with minor hassle, read on).

This shows the parcel shelf, there are 4 screws retaining the speaker, and 4 white clips holding the speaker grill on.
Use pliers to compress the clips and push them through to release.

Removed Grill

Factory Speaker, Release the clip and remove the screws retaining it with an 8mm socket or stubby phillips head.

Optional Sound Deadening. I paid 40 dollars and only used half of it.

Partially installed sound Deadening to underside of parcel shelf

Comparison of factory wiring and standard aftermarket wiring. Standard wiring barely reaches the factory speaker. New wiring must be long enough to tuck under parcel shelf and through a hold next to the seat belt mount for underside access.

Extension wiring for new speakers.

Cut off Factory Wiring Clip.

Solder and Tape Extension Wiring to Factory wires, matching polarity using the wiring diagram.

New and Old Speakers (rear)

Tuck the new wiring down next to the hole near the seat belt reel.

Screw in and plug in new speaker, using factory holes and screws.

Now onto the fronts.
Take the door trim off, i suggest using a plastic trim removal tool as it doesn't damage the trim like screwdrivers do, I bought a set of tools off ebay for $2.75 Delivered from China.

There is a screw behind the door release, one under the interior door handle, 2 on the edge of the trim, you also must release the power windows and mirrors by prying the panel out. Then you can pry the trim for the door, the clips will click out. Some may stay stuck in the door so you need to remove them and refit them to the door trim.

Since the new speakers have tweeters, the factory ones need to go. pry the trim panel off, pry the speaker out and then USING YOUR BEST ASIAN HANDS, release the wiring clip that is just below dash level.

This is the factory door speaker plug, unplug it and take the factory speaker out. You can see to the left of the speaker a tiny black sticker that is covering a hole you can use to feed you new wiring into the door panel.

Again, make an extension harness, remembering the factory wiring goes to the front of speaker, but the aftermarket will be to the rear.

Major challenge i had was the factory door speaker is on a funny mounting plate, and my speakers were too small to screw into the door directly. Problem 2 is that the speaker spacers did not clear the door skin when installed. So I took one and ripped it into 2 thinner spacers.

Speaker installed in spacer

On the back of the factory door trim is this sound cone thing. It doesn't clear the speakers so chop it off. I used a small drill bit to do this.

Nice job & description, if it was me I wouldn't cut of the factory plug but remove the plastic and solder on the sliders. This will make it easier to put back the factory speaker if for any reason need to take the upgraded speakers.

Any plans for an amps or still in the wish list!

I couldn't get the wires to come out of the plug, they are stuck in good. No amp plans, I find all the extra wiring is probably not worth it for a daily.

I just shoved the wires deep into the end of the plug and its held in with some tape. Been working fine for me ever since. Obviously i'll get around to soldering it at some point haha.

I can't even begin to tell you the difference between aftermarket speakers that are amplified vs unamplified. Especially with a stock headunit!
The stock headunit can barely produce enough power to run aftermarket speakers. They will still work, but you wont get the type of quality out of the speaker as you would with an amplifier.
I used to run aftermarket speakers in the back with no amplifier and couldn't even tell the difference between between the stock ones at all.
Until I got an amplifier, it was blissful!

Maybe it is worth doing then, I already have a little kenwood 4 channel in the shed. The main thing is that I dont know what kind of outputs the factory head unit had, not sure if it has RCA's

Factory unit does not have an RCA input. You can either get an aftermarket one, or just run an RCA converter if you really wish to retain the stock head unit (which I have done)
