If you aren't strengthening the engine then it is a must to prevent engine damage.

Yeah, no, maybe....

Simple tricks to avoid needing it.

Running a higher octane fuel reduces detonation.

Running a efficient inter-cooler on turbo setups reduces intake temps.

Adding decompression plates under the heads or lower compression pistons reduces detonation.

Correctly setting the ignition timing graph, to the selected fuel VS boost will avoid this happening.

Its all in the setup, engine build and or tune to optimize the engine performance.

I had a boilermaker mate who supercharged a old Datsun 1600, a simple water washer bottle, higher pressure pump than the standard washer bottle little motor and a jet running into his intake piping, all connected up to a micro switch on his carb did the trick for him, he did not need to drop compression ratios and use to leave V8's for dust.

water meth helps but not desired on street cars if you can help it (just as nos works as a power adder due to inconsistencies in fuel and having to refill) (as per water meth) it becomes painful and not so desirable

my 2 bob if using water meth have a good level indicator
